Helsinki, Finland

My general impression of Helsinki is that it feels not as modern nor grand as I expected it to be.  It has a bit of Eastern European feel and I was not really expecting it to be 'not' that progressive.  Personally a day is more than enough going to this place.

Airport: Helsinki Vantaa
Transportation: Bus 615: takes around 30 minutes and you reach the main train station.

Tip: If you are doing a day trip, just get the 12 Euro ticket, it is good to go back and forth to the airport, and you can use in all the trams and buses in Helsinki.  Otherwise, one way costs around 5 Euros (as of April 2015).

Where we stayed: We stayed in Hilton at the airport and the hotel was really comfortable and nice.

Places to Visit and Eat

Hakaniemi  Market Square

It's a fish and street covered market.  You can get fresh produce and 'ready to eat' meat.  They also have small coffee shops and food places you can eat.

Nice Coffee shop in the covered market

Selling cured meats and even reindeer salamis

Salmon and other fishes

This was their Easter Bread.

Robert's Coffee

A coffee franchise... they have interesting kinds of lattes.. you might want to just check it out

The Soup Kitchen

In this market, we had our lunch where they only serve soup - and guess what, the name is called "SOUP Kitchen" (I know what you guys are thinking).  But they really serve delicious soup. It is quite big and filling... and more importantly, cheap! We tried out Seafood soup (Salmon, Mussels, and Shrimps) for 9.50 Euros.

The Seafood Soup with some sort of cream that tasted like Mayonnaise (I ended up removing the cream)

Places to Visit

Uspenski Cathedral (Orthodox)

Apparently, the largest orthodox church in Western Europe.  Like any other Orthodox church, the interiors are quite interesting to see.

View from the Church

Lutheran Cathedral (White Church)

Beautiful Lutheran Cathedral located at the Senate Square.   It has some sort of towering figure.  However, the interior is slightly simple (and so do not compare this to Catholic churches where the interiors are lavishly designed)

The Esplanade

Tehy have famous shops as well, and personally I like the Tea shop situated there. It ends in the market area where you can go for some cheap and good food. You can find the Tourist Info office here too.

Rock Church (Temppeliaukio Kirkko)

A unique church built on the rock. I think they did drill thru the rock to create the Church.  The Interior is simple yet it seems to be having some sort of optical illusion.
This is a bit far from the rest of the places to visit and you will need to take a bus there.

Shopping Area (Aleksanterinkatu)

Not really quite interesting for me as this was a bit short for a shopping street and brands where pretty much international except for Marimekko.

The Railway Station (Rautatieasema)

Since you are stopping here when you take bus 615 from the airport. Do spend some time checking out the interesting architecture of this building. Try going into Burger King, it actually looks quite interesting adorned with its artistic mosaic.
