Amsterdam, Netherlands

Ways to go to Amsterdam:

  • From Schipol Airport
    • you can take an intercity direct train Amsterdam Centraal which takes around 20 minutes and cost around 5 euros.
  • By Boat
    • There’s a boat (Stena Line) which goes to Hoek van Holland Haven (a stop before Hoek van Holland Strand).   And you take a train for 1.5 hours to Amsterdam Central (with an interchange in Schiedan Centrum)
  • By Train
    • Eurostar or Eurorail, which stops at Amsterdam Centraal

Tips (especially for US Folks): It is faster to just buy a ticket via machine.  But your credit card needs to be a chip card and you need to know your PIN.

The Amsterdam Centraal Station

Museum Plein

This entire area has most of the museums from the Rijk Museum, which stores Rembrandt’s paintings to Van Gogh and Modern Arts Museum.  Going around? You can take a GVB Day ticket which costs around 7.50 (a single ride costs around 2.80).  Otherwise, Hop-on and Hop-off buses or water buses (19 Euros).    The water buses might be better so that you can really get the full experience of Amsterdam (as of April 2015).

Just near the Amsterdam Centraal Station, when you go out of the station, look towards your left, it is right near the floating Chinese Restaurant.  It is a public library and actually has a nice restaurant on the 7th floor (La Place) where you can grab something food and you have a good view of Amsterdam.
