Maui, Hawaii

Airport: Kahului (OGG)

Tips

  • Snorkeling - Snorkels, fins, and life vest, and waterproof camera
  • Get water/ aqua shoes. Some places like La Perouse is rocky due to Basaltic lava but quite nice to go for a swim
  • Sunblock, Sunglasses, Aloe lotion, Beach Towel - all the stuff you bring to the beach

Haleakalā National Park Hawai'i
https://www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm

Mountains are very sacred to Hawaiians.  This place is known a few things

  • For it's beautiful sunrise which apparently you need to get a ticket to go up before hand.
  • For it's colourful and gorgeous crater
  • And for it's unique species - flora and fauna.  One plant that is very unique and can be found only in Haleakala is the silver sword!
  • We also saw an owl in the day time. It is apparently a daytime (yes! daytime) owl called Pueo and we saw them flying on our way down from the peak.  Read more here.

Silver sword (both left and right)

Fantastic view of the crater

Hookipa Beach Park

Hookipa is called the Windsurfing Mecca but it is know for board surfing and many others.
But one thing special about this place is you will see the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu) lazing on the shore.  We went there around later in the afternoon around 5-ish and they were just resting there on the shore. My friend said, as soon as the sun sets, there is actually more of them bobbing up the shores.   Hawaiians do make sure that you don't go near them and thus, there is some rope to stop you from going very near and signs for you not to touch or feed them.

The Paia Fishmarket
https://paiafishmarket.com/

Had a lunch plate (Mahi) for 20.95 which includes coleslaw and a side of Cajun Rice (or Fries).
It was good, not the best I've tasted but still good. It was also just like a small, crowded, and kinda cheap place to go.

Beach Bums
We took the BBQ Platters(25.95) with 2 sides and cornbread - and you have bbq ribs, hot links (spicy sausage) and choose 2 others and we chose brisket and smoked spam!

-Ribs was OK - not really that good
- Brisket was OK
- Smoked spam - didn't really see much difference from smoked vs non-smoked so felt just like ordinary spam.

Generally it was OK, nice place to hang out in the harbor and food is just OK.

Wailou - La Perouse Bay
Maps here.
It's a cultural site where you can see a lot of lava rocks.

Might be good swimming shoes since it's a bit rocky from the lava rocks.  You can see fish like Yellow Tangs.

Kealia Pond
Maps here.

On the way to Kihei and Wailea, you might want to to stop at Kealia Pond.   It is very pretty and has some sort of hut and ramp to walk around.. on one side is the pond and the other side is a beach, the Mealaea Bay.

Seems like some parts of the beach is also the nesting area for sea turtles though didn't find one there.

A very quiet beach with not a lot of people

Hawaiians love their Shaved Ice and this is one of the popular ones

Olawalu Beach Park
Maps here.
I think one thing about Hawaii is you can just drive down the road and stop at the beach fronts. There are a lot of beach parks.  This one was actually not bad, there is a number of people and a bit sandy, water was not as clear but still nice and quiet.

Kapalua

Quite Famous for the glitzy resorts like Ritz Carlton and Golf courses.  We drove down and there was this Honolua Bay which looks amazing for snorkeling. I think you park on the roadside and trek down. I will try this next time I visit Hawaii!

Papalaua Beach Park
Maps here.

This was just close to Olawula Beach and we went like 9 am (July 3, 2017) and it was really very windy! The shore seems to be a lot more deep though so we ended up going back to Olawula beach.
