Description: Come explore San Francisco's first "suburb," evolving from a Victorian playground to a post 1906 earthquake and fire refugee camp, to ultimately the epicenter of the San Francisco sound during the Summer of Love, hosting Hippies, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Hell's Angels and Charles Manson. Somewhat strenuous.

European Navigator discovered San Francisco Bay thru horse not by sea - Portola. Too foggy and hard to find by the sea. Blocked by Aacatraz and Angel Island. Drake's Bay!

Haight - Neighborhood was built in 1860s and really grown during 1870s

The victorians survived the fire in 1906.

Panhandle - wasn't even part of SF. It was part of Ranch de Noe de San Miguel (same as "Noe Valley"). Governor Haight bought it for a dollar and called it initially as part of outside lands and that is why the concert "OUTSIDE LANDS".

Golden Park was actually NY envy and so they made it 50 acres bigger Olmsted did not design it but by a city engineer, sand dune and horshe - becaming dumping ground for horse shit! John McLaren is the one that designed Golden Gate Park. He hated statues.


1880 - Guilded Age
Amusement Park called The Chutes-Slide to water in Cole Valley. Cole and Carl, there used to be a small lake.

1906 Big Earthquake - stats was manipulated to not scare investment. Our seal is that if the Phoenix! Wood frame building on sand, not bad for earthquake! Building wasn't destroyed in Haight!
This was spared from fire which stops in Van ness and 20th at the golden fire hydrant! During that time this became a refugee center and there were plenty of Earthquake Shacks.

Painted ladies - was a function of hippies - there was no bright yellow,pink and fuschia - came out after 1920s

1957 - Free way revolt!!

1965 to 68 - before summer of love and bands were created and formed and then summer of love and then influx of folks and then downhill

Hippie - definition - Beatniks' little brother- educated; wearing tie dyed, smoked joint, and guitar as they dont want to be their older brother - black clothes drinking coffee and writing poems (Beatniks)

4 season house because of the seal (waller and masonic). Mix is called transitional and combination of stick and Queen Anne. Turret is for skylight
