Portland Recommendations from Kat

For when you finally go to Portland :)

Perfect. I just gave this list to someone a few months ago. I bolded the ones that I would absolutely go to if I had very limited time.

Btw, Brunch is like a sport in Portland. Everyone plays the waiting game.

DO
  • Powells Bookstore on Burnside. If you love cookbooks or home/garden, then go to the location on Hawthorne that specializes in that.
  • Saturday Farmers Market at Portland State U. campus
  • Shop/WindowShop on (1) Hawthorne (between 39th and 32nd); Division St between 30th - 35th, (2) the Pearl District (posh area; big name brands); (3) Alberta St (lots of cute small shops, crafts shops), (4) Hawthorne and Division St are parallel and super close so can be done in same day, (5) Mississippi street where Gravy is is also a good place to shop. Outside of Pearl District, all the other shopping areas are very local, mom/pop and unique. Pearl is more well-known brands. But really, Portland is so small, you can cross town in 15minutes.
  • Columbia outlet outside of Portland if you really like their clothes. Great discounts to be had. I think perkshub might have a coupon for PDX Googlers
  • Kitchen Kaboodle if you're a kitchen gadget nerd like me
  • Movie and drink/dinner at Bagdad Theater - sit on balcony level to enjoy beer/food
  • Hike Multnomah Falls (there's an easy and moderate trail) and so pretty with waterfall, views of Columbia River
  • Daytrip to Astoria or any of the seaside towns
  • I once did a daytrip to Salumi in Seattle just to eat their charcuterie and oxtail sandwich. MMMM.
EAT
  • Tasty and Sons - great brunch (must get burmese red pork stew, fried chix biscuit sandwich)
  • Tasty and Alder - great dinner
  • Screendoor - great Southern fare / brunch but possible 2-hr wait during prime brunch time. Their dinner is great too.
  • Ox - my favorite place for dinner, no reservations and hard to get into during prime time. I usually so super early or late. Also has a bar next door for snacks/drinks
  • Podnah's - go on Saturday night when they have their Prime Rib Special. Must get prime rib!
  • Pine State Biscuits - at Saturday Farmers Market + stores all over Portland
  • bar/restaurant hop on Division St. between 28th and 34th - TONS of eateries/drinks and some small boutiques.  There's a nice food cart pod with beer garden on 28th/Division.
  • Pok Pok (thai food) is on Division but prepare for long wait so put name down and go have a drink or snack on their famous Vietnamese wings their sister bar across the street - Whiskey Soda Lounge. Must try Khao Soi Kai, Wings, pork belly/prawn stew
  • Salt & Straw Ice Cream on Division or Alberta - try ALL the flavors, they don't care! I love the SeaSalt Caramel. - in LA now so maybe skip
  • Blue Star donuts - on Abbott Kinney now so mayby skip
  • Voodoo is fine for the kitsch but don't waste time in line at the original location. Go to their 2nd location (1501 N.E. Davis St. in Portland) usually shorter wait
  • CHOP has great charcuterie...even better than Olympic Provisions
  • Laurelhurst Market & Restaurant - it's a butcher shop / restaurant
  • Gravy (on Mississippi) - my favorite brunch place (green chile pork with crispy hash browns :))
  • Swedeedee for brunch
  • St. Jack Bistro - love this French bistro
  • Apizza Schools - best pizza in Portland
  • Food Carts in Downtown -gets really busy during lunch time on weekdays. Everyone recommends Nong's Khao Man Gai which is singagoriean/thai chicken + rice dish. It's good but not "destination" for me esp if you've had the great ones in LA.
