San Francisco Pandemic Update - Personal Experience on Corona Virus Pandemic

San Francisco didn't go crazy right away like the rest of the US.  After declaring Pandemic by WHO on March 11, it was still OK, there were still toilet papers and alcohol but you realize that day by day, there are more people buying and hoarding things ... and like over the weekend (March 14-15), alcohol, toilet paper, and canned goods are all gone or groceries are forcing strict rules on limited purchase.

July 29, 2020
There has been a lot of folks moving out of San Francisco and so I also decided to give up my my SF apartment. It was expensive for 3950 for 2 Bd 2 BA.

Anyway, I went for a Covid Testing along Valencia to make sure that I am OK and I am not going to infect my relatives.

Unfortunately, One Medical forgot to email me back my results (I was supposed to wait for an email) and only got the result after asking them on August 24, 2020. It was a bit disappointing considering the results was already ready 2-3 days after.

April 20, Monday

They are starting require people to wear masks to get to establishments. That is really good.

April 18, Saturday

San Francisco was empty. I walked around downtown for 4 hours back and forth.

April 10, Wednesday

Finally, Philz in Mission is open again, however they only do mobile order/pick-up and open only from 7am to 2 Pm.  I think they just opened earlier this week.

April 9, Thursday

Having more fun with FB video chat.. there are a lot of filters and games....

April 8, Wednesday

Meanwhile in Mission, not sure if this person thinks, a "BEEkeeper" suit will protect him from the Corona Bees....

and Dynamo Donut

April 6, Monday

Today was raining so I tried going to the "grocery" Big Lots to check out since there will NOT be any people around. I went around 4 and there was really very very very few. And tried looking for Alcohol and I got lucky!!!!

Also ordered in Coco's which was interesting, you call and you can use the QR code/apple pay to pay (though I ended up using credit card since I can't do Apple pay, since I don't have an Iphone)

receipts where you can just tell them which one you ordered

April 4, Saturday

Because of all these photos that I saw online.. I made my own version of "funny" PPEs hahaah

This was obviously inspired from a lot of memes and pictures below:

April 3, Saturday

Not the best time to groceries as there are long lines due food banks but some started sellings masks but they are ridiculous as they are almost 1 dollar per mask!!!

March 31, Tuesday

Went at around 10, right after Senior Shopping Hours, and finally saw some Toilet Papers ... I think they usually re-stock on Mondays and Wednesdays (but for some reason, they might have re-stocked yesterday)

March 29, Sunday

Just walked around today .. didn't really do any groceries.. just needed a walk and coffee

I can see Masks, with injections, and condom.... hmmmm. so San Francisco

Udupi palace is obviously just to-go

Shops started putting plastic/glass/acrylic... it's really good to protect the workers

Safeway had a line outside.... but people were following the 6ft rule

March 28, Saturday

I went to Lake Merced and Funston Park near Daly City. They started closing the parking lots since they are discouraging people from clustering in the parks.  Fortunately, we parked in a street nearby and not the main parking lot and we can still see a few (really few people) walking around. Apparently, the main parking lot was already closed.

Went to Seafood City, Grocery as usual was packed so I didn't go there so I ended up just buying food from Crispy Town and Grill City.

March 27, Friday

Just walked to get my coffee and support local coffee shops.  I had my ginger latte at UpForDayz and it was sweet that they had something to help the frontliners too.  While walking, saw many signs that really kinda make you realize that there is still hope for humanity.

March 26, Thursday

Went down to Ritual to grab my coffee and people were definitely Social distancing. BiRite had a long line to get in.. but they have "marks" so you stay 6 ft away from the rest. Tartine's was relatively empty too except for 1 or 2.

Tartine's and it was so easy to get bread (this was around almost 4 pm)

People were lining up to get to Bi-Rite Grocery Store

You will notice more and more shops boarding up

March 25, Wednesday

I decided to go for a run early to Bernal Heights since if I go around 4 or later, seems like it gets crowded with People starting their "after-work" afternoon walks.  I went around 2ish and seems like Bernal was relatively empty except for a few joggers which was good.

Also found the Bernal Heights repainted with "Solidarity at 8" and didn't really know about this but after Googling, apparently, it is to Thank all the Health Care workers and spending Sunday nights at 8 PM to cheer our modern Super Heroes!

Went to the grocery to buy some stuff and it was also relatively NOT crowded.  Veggies, etc were re-stocked but Toilet Papers, Rice, and Pasta as well as canned goods were still very few (or none).

McDonalds at 24th Street and Mission have Xs for lining up and there were no homeless people cuz there were not seats so I guess a good point.

March 22, Sunday

Went for my Ritual Coffee in Valencia Street but really disturbed that peopel are not really following Social Distancing.  I saw a group of cyclist just hanging around the parklet in Ritual (there were like at least 10 of them) enjoying and drinking coffee. I did my best to stay away from People but these folks are just ... I dunno.

I also see Skateboarders near the corner of my street just going on with their lives and socializing with fellow skaters everyday!!

March 21, Saturday

Pacific Island Market in South San Francisco started having "lines" for people to stay 6 ft away from each other when lining in the cashiers

March 20, Friday

I saw some shops like Big Lots having SENIOR Shopping Time!

March 19, Thursday

Did my afternoon walk to get my coffee but Linea Cafe was closed but Brew Cha (and Boba guys) was open.

One interesting thing that I noted was that shops were closed but they were also covering their shops with some sort of plywood, I guess to stop theft, breaking the window, or vandalism.  I guess now that there are less people, some crazy un-disciplined people will go around vandalizing and breaking windows.... honestly, sometimes I ask why people are just soooooo evil.

The streets were relatively empty, with few cars and few people walking

Arizemendi Bakery in Valencia Street was open and they interesting have this 6-ft radius ...

Though Boba Guys was kinda crowded because it is their last day before they close due to the Corona Virus

March 18, Wednesday

I went out to get some baking flour and butter.  Seems like they have finally re-stocked. My colleague sent me this picture with a truck in the morning, re-stocking the Mexican grocery along 26th/Mission St.

March 16, Monday

Had to leave the house since cleaner was coming to my place and going to vacuum and clean our flat. I took the 8.46 AM shuttle to San Bruno (Youtube) and I was the only passenger.

The highway was also very empty, this is not the normal Monday morning commute!

and of course just funny stuff....

and how can we forget the Tech Haters!

and Postings in Alamo Drafthouse regarding Corona Virus, now that we are not supposed to have gathering of more than 100 people

As of 12 Noon Monday, Mayor London Breed announced a Shelter in Place Only for San Francisco

and had a full briefing at 1 PM

  • Basically this means, as per Business Insider,
    • As of 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, the San Francisco Bay Area is under a 3-week "shelter-in-place" order in an effort to contain the coronavirus.
    • The region's estimated 6.7 million people are directed to stay indoors as much as possible and can only leave for essential needs, like to go grocery shopping.
    • Bars, entertainment venues, and nightclubs are closed, and restaurants can only offer takeout food.
    • People will still be allowed to go out for a walk, a run, a hike, or to let their pet go to the bathroom, as long as they keep 6 feet between themselves and others.

And seems like people also are running to the groceries to buy things, I went to Seafood city around 3 PM in South San Francisco and the grocery line was really long that I didn't wait anymore.  I went to Safeway later in the day around 5 and there was a line outside to control the crowd, went fast, and it was actually all ok, though not much stuff inside.  Grocery outlet in South Vanness, basically it was really empty meat, vegetables sections, no more baking flour or pasta too, nor toilet papers.

Vegetable section in Safeway. Still had some stuff

Line outside Safeway

and I also saw people lining up outside a Weed Shop near Front Porch

March 15, Saturday

Went back to Grocery Bargain outlet and the meat portions were all gone. No more minced meat, chicken, etc.

March 14, Saturday

Big Lots at 6.30 PM! All the Pasta and Rice were gone. No more toilet papers.  I was looking for paper towels and I fortunatley found one bec. there were 6 packs hidden all the way to the back in the Camping Area (not where you usually find toilets papers and kitchen towels)

Grocery Bargain Outlet
They were already limiting purchase of toilet papers, water, and bleach

March 12,  Thursday

Grocery Bargain outlet still have some moist wipes but no alcohol wipes anymore

Walgreens already run out of Alcohol, there were still some toilet papers

March 11, Wednesday

WHO declared Corona Virus Spread to be a PANDEMIC!

July 9,  2021
It's been more than a year since they officially called a lock-down. June 15 - things started opening up and we are now supposed to go back to work (hybrid approach - 3 days at work and 2 days at home).  I have been looking around for housing both in Santa Clara Area and San Francisco and seems like it is relatively cheaper still.

Santa Clara has one bedroom that you can get as low as 1.3+ and seems like 1.6/1.8K was a very common price.

San Francisco Seems to have decent 1BR for 2K now. It's hard to get that price even for a studio last time. And 3BRs are available for as low as 3.5K.
